Low Back Pain
It is estimated that up to 84% of adults have low back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain can occur for many different reasons, some of which include:
- Arthritis
- Herniated Discs
- Spinal Stenosis
- Poor posture
- Weak core / lower body
- Stiffness in the hips/lumbar spine
Whatever the reason may be, low back pain can often cause you to have difficulty getting comfortable when it’s time to sleep and it may wake you in the middle of the night. Getting a full night’s sleep is vital to your health!
Sleeping Positions That Reduce Low Back Pain
- When sleeping on your back, you should position a pillow beneath your knees. This will bend your knees slightly and bring your spine into a more neutral position. This will take pressure off the bones of your spine (vertebrae).
- When sleeping on your side, you should position a pillow between your knees and in front of your chest. This will keep your hips and chest in a more neutral position, which will help to keep your spine from twisting in the night.
- When sleeping on your belly, you should position a pillow beneath your stomach. This again will help to bring your spine into a more neutral position and relieve pressures in your vertebrae
